A medical massage therapist is a licensed massage therapist (LMT) who treats health conditions. Medical massage therapy involves different types of therapeutic approaches that focus on your body’s soft tissue (technically all tissue in the body is soft tissue (tendons, tissues, muscles, fascia, ligaments, connective tissue, peri visceral tissue etc.)). In short, this therapy works on all your components that support and move your body and how they are connected and respond to each other. Medical Massage uses all the tools as needed not this one or that one. Simply put, if you are in pain a medical massage therapist is who you are looking for.
Some off the disciplines involved in MEDICAL MASSAGE are:
Orthopedic Massage
Lymph Drainage (LDT, LLCC)
Neuromuscular Therapy (NMT)
Myofascial release (MFR)
Visceral massage
Breathwork
Active Isolated Stretching (AIS)
Cupping
Kinesio Taping (CKTP)
Frequency Specific Microcurrent (FSM)
Medical massage tends to think of the body in 3 dimensions and its connections. Therapeutic massage may treat elbow pain right the elbow while medical massage will consider all the potential referral spots, the entrapment zones, adhesions, scar tissue, and postural abnormalities. It is also important to know how muscle tension can impede blood, interstitial fluid, and lymph and how those effect everything else.
